Scientific seminar: A multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of Neurofibromatosis Type 1

Organized by the Tam Anh Research Institute (TAMRI) and Tam Anh General Hospital Group, this program aims to update and exchange clinical advances in the diagnosis and management of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). As a complex genetic disorder affecting multiple organs, NF1 requires close coordination across various medical specialties.
Neurofibromatosis is a rare genetic disorder with several clinical forms. Among them, Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), also known as von Recklinghausen’s disease, is the most common, with a global incidence of approximately 1 in 2,000 to 3,000. The disease exhibits diverse clinical phenotypes that can appear from birth through adulthood, affecting the skin, nervous system, bones, and other organs. These factors present significant challenges for screening, early diagnosis, and long-term management.
In Vietnam, epidemiological and clinical data on NF1 remain limited due to challenges in definitive diagnosis and patient follow-up. While many characteristic symptoms emerge during childhood, the risk of tumor progression and malignant transformation increases with age. Therefore, long-term monitoring and a multidisciplinary management model, integrating Pediatrics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Radiology, and Rehabilitation, are essential to optimizing treatment outcomes.
In addition to surgical resection, targeted therapies are now being applied to NF1 patients with plexiform neurofibromas. Initial positive clinical results have opened new therapeutic avenues, particularly for cases where surgical intervention is difficult.
At the seminar “A multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of Neurofibromatosis Type 1,” experts will update clinical diagnostic criteria for NF1 and share practical experiences in multidisciplinary management. The program will also analyze the roles of surgery and targeted therapies in disease control, topics of high clinical relevance in clinical settings.
