On April 25, the Tam Anh Research Institute (TAMRI), in collaboration with the Oncology Center of Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, will host a scientific symposium: Applications of reconstructive microsurgery in the treatment of lymphedema after breast cancer treatment”. The event features leading experts from prestigious domestic and international medical institutions.

applications of reconstructive microsurgery for post breast cancer lymphedema

Post–breast cancer lymphedema typically manifests in the arm due to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid. This condition occurs in approximately 10-15% of patients who undergo axillary lymph node dissection, with risks significantly increasing for those receiving axillary radiation therapy. Patients may experience pain , a sensation of heaviness, limited upper limb mobility, and difficulty performing daily activities.

While arm lymphedema is often incurable, early detection and intervention can alleviate symptoms and limit disease progression. Currently, reconstructive microsurgery is being adopted as a comprehensive approach, focusing on functional recovery and symptom improvement rather than symptom control alone.

At the symposium, leading experts will discuss the latest trends and advancements in lymphedema surgery, including: Combined breast reconstruction and lymphedema surgery; perioperative rehabilitation in lymphatic and breast surgery; the application of Indocyanine Green (ICG) and ultrasound in the diagnosis and surgical planning of lymphedema.

A highlight of the symposium includes direct clinical examinations by experts, the sharing of practical clinical cases, and evidence-based results of modern techniques aimed at enhancing the quality of life for breast cancer survivors.
