On October 5, Tam Anh Research Institute successfully hosted a seminar titled “Caring For Patients With Venous Catheters.”

The seminar attracted a large audience of nurses and medical professionals within Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC. The panel of speakers included Assoc. Prof Tran Quang Binh, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer at Tam Anh General Hospital HCMC; Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh, MSc, Deputy Director of Nursing; and Le Thi My Hanh, MSc, also Deputy Director of Nursing.

The event began with opening remarks from Assoc. Prof Tran Quang Binh, MD, PhD, who emphasized the crucial role of continuous education and skill refinement for nursing staff in improving patient care and clinical outcomes.

Nguyen Thuy An, MSc, Head Nurse of the Endoscopy & Laparoscopic Surgery Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC, followed with a presentation on safety in intravenous therapy. She outlined  fundamental principles for safe IV therapy:

She also presented clinical case studies, illustrating errors such as incorrect medication routes, improper dosages, misidentification of patients, and incomplete documentation. These examples highlighted the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols and fostering a non-punitive work culture.

Her second presentation on management of intravenous therapy equipment addressed best practices in handling and maintaining IV devices and the standards for safe catheter removal. She covered key topics, including skin antisepsis, catheter stabilization, dressing changes, tubing replacement, drug administration via intravenous access, and protocols for maintaining catheter patency. The presentation offered a detailed and comprehensive guide to IV therapy management.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, MSc, Deputy Head Nurse of the Emergency Department at Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC presented on care for patients with venous catheters. She discussed common complications associated with central venous catheters (CVCs) and strategies for prevention. She emphasized the importance of catheter care in preventing catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and other complications. Regular assessment of the continued need for the catheter, early removal when no longer required, and adherence to sterile procedures are critical for minimizing risks. She reiterated that all members of the healthcare team share responsibility for ongoing catheter evaluation and care to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.

In the final segment of the seminar, the panel and speakers addressed questions from attendees. The event provided valuable insights and was an opportunity for the nursing team at Tam Anh General Hospital HCMC, as well as other participants, to gain knowledge, share experiences, and enhance their technical and clinical skills.
