On April 17, 2026, the Tam Anh Research Institute, in collaboration with the Orthopedic Center of Tam Anh General Hospital, hosted the scientific seminar: “Total hip arthroplasty via the ABMS approach: 2-year experiences and outcomes.”

Presiding over the seminar, Dr. Le Van Tuan, MD, PhD, Director of the Orthopedic Center at Tam Anh General Hospital HCMC, emphasized that total hip arthroplasty is an effective treatment for end-stage hip conditions. He noted that surgical success depends on multiple factors, specifically the surgical technique and the selection of implants. Understanding a patient’s unique anatomy and applying the appropriate surgical approach are essential to optimizing results, reducing complications, and restoring the patient’s quality of life.

Dr. Le Van Tuan delivered the opening remarks at the seminar: “Total hip arthroplasty via the ABMS approach: 2-year experiences and outcomes.”
The Critical Role of Technique and Implant Selection
Citing the annual report from the German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD), Professor Alois Franz highlighted that in 2025, Germany recorded 160,000 primary hip replacements and 18,000 revision surgeries. Notably, approximately 50% of these revisions required a femoral stem replacement. This data underscores that selecting the correct surgical technique and suitable implants is vital for long-term patient recovery.

To mitigate potential complications, Dr. Huynh Ngoc Buu emphasized the importance of preoperative planning. With the support of specialized software such as TraumaCAD and MediCAD, surgeons can achieve high precision in determining the surgical approach, component positioning, and implant sizing. This level of planning minimizes postoperative risks and enhances overall treatment efficacy.

Dr. Huynh Ngoc Buu presented his report, “Hip arthroplasty via the ABMS approach – difficulties and challenges.”
To facilitate faster recovery and superior pain management, Tam Anh surgeons have consistently innovated through advanced techniques like the ABMS (Anterolateral Base Minimally Invasive Surgery) approach. Dr. Vo Chau Hoang Long explained that this anterolateral, muscle-sparing approach promotes rapid rehabilitation, reduces the risk of dislocation, and allows for early ambulation and discharge.

Presenting a summary of over two years of implementation, Dr. Le Dinh Khoa reported that 266 cases have been successfully performed using the ABMS method at Tam Anh General Hospital HCMC. The outcomes have been consistently favorable: patients experience minimal pain and blood loss, recover significantly faster, and are often discharged within 48 hours. Furthermore, the ABMS technique is compatible with various implants and does not require specialized instrumentation, providing surgeons with greater flexibility in personalized care.

Dr. Le Dinh Khoa answered questions from seminar participants.
With the goal of sharing, updating, and exchanging knowledge and experience regarding the ABMS (Anterolateral Base Minimally Invasive Surgery) approach in hip replacement, specifically the outcomes after two years of implementation at Tam Anh General Hospital, leading domestic and international experts in Orthopedics presented the following specialized reports:
– Prof. Alois Franz (Medical Director, Marien-krankenhaus Siegen, Germany): “How to Choose the Perfect Stem for Primary THA”
– Le Dinh Khoa, MD, MSc (Head of Arthroplasty Department, Tam Anh General Hospital HCMC): “ABMS Total Hip Arthroplasty: 2-Year Result”

– Huynh Ngoc Buu, MD (Orthopedic Center, Tam Anh General Hospital HCMC): “Hip Arthroplasty via the ABMS Approach – Difficulties and Challenges”
By pursuing a spirit of continuous innovation and medical excellence, the Tam Anh Research Institute and the Orthopedic Center continue to affirm their pioneering roles in applying modern surgical techniques. These advancements ensure optimal, long-term treatment solutions while reducing the medical and financial burden on patients and their families.
