Behind major advances in molecular targeted therapies are leading scientific minds, among them Professor Yoshiya Tanaka, MD, PhD. On the occasion of his upcoming participation in the scientific symposium “Biologics therapies: The key to comprehensive and sustainable control of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)” organized by Tam Anh Research Institute, we revisit the distinguished academic achievements of this globally recognized expert.

Professor Yoshiya Tanaka is a leading authority in rheumatology and clinical immunology in Japan and internationally. At the University of Occupational and Environmental Health (UOEH), Japan, he serves as a Principal Investigator and Consultant Rheumatologist.

Since 2025, he has held the position of Distinguished Professor in the Department of Molecular Targeted Therapeutics at the UOEH School of Medicine. Previously, he served as Professor and Chairman of the First Department of Internal Medicine from 2000 to 2025, and as Dean of the Graduate School of Health Sciences from 2017 to 2024.

His work focuses on elucidating pathogenic mechanisms and developing innovative molecular targeted therapies for systemic autoimmune diseases, rheumatic conditions, and osteoporosis.

He is a leader in “bench-to-bedside” research, identifying core mechanisms of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases while advancing the clinical application of novel therapies. He actively promotes collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians, facilitating clinical trials across departmental, institutional, national, and international levels.

He possesses a prolific research portfolio with over 1,070 peer reviewed English scientific articles. Notably, his research boasts a cumulative Impact Factor exceeding 6,400, a widely recognized metric used to evaluate the prestige of scientific journals based on their average citation rates. Furthermore, his h-index has reached 117, a metric that balances the quantity and quality of scholarly output. This high index underscores the significant value of his research, which is trusted and extensively cited as a foundation for further development by the international scientific community.

In terms of professional leadership, he currently serves as the President of the Japan College of Rheumatology (JCR) and the President of the Japan Society for Clinical Immunology (JSCI/JACI). His past leadership roles include serving as President of the Asia-Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) in 2025 and President of the Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research (JSBMR) from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, he has held key positions such as Chair of the International Affairs Committee and Co-Chair/Chair of the Scientific Committee of APLAR, Chair of the International Committee of the JCR, and is a board member of numerous other prestigious associations.

In the field of academic publishing, Professor Tanaka serves as the Associate Editor for several prestigious scientific journals, including Rheumatic & Musculoskeletal Diseases Open (RMD Open), Rheumatology, Cytokine, Arthritis Research & Therapy (AR&T), and the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases (IJRD). Additionally, he is an Honorary Editor for Modern Rheumatology Case Reports (MRCR) and a member of the editorial boards for Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases (ARD), Modern Rheumatology (MR), among others.

Throughout his career, his relentless dedication has been recognized with numerous awards from major organizations such as JSBMR, JCR, and the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR). Most notably, he was bestowed with the prestigious Honorary Award by EULAR in 2023.
