The seminar attracted numerous domestic and international delegates, including:

Assoc. Prof Tran Quang Binh, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Director of Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC, kicked off the program with a brief introduction. He highlighted the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Vietnam, emphasizing its impact on approximately 10% of the population. There are several factors that can contribute to the development of CKD, such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, immune-related disorders, and obstructive pathologies that can affect kidney function. Damage to the kidneys occurs over time and is a long-term condition. Hemodialysis and kidney transplantation are two highly effective treatment options for individuals with CKD. Ensuring the highest level of water quality is of utmost importance in hemodialysis to protect patients from harmful substances, microorganisms, and infectious agents throughout their treatment.

Ta Phuong Dung, MD, Deputy Director of the Urology-Nephrology-Andrology Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC, expresses sincere gratitude to all delegates and partners for their valuable presence and contributions during the seminar. She highlighted the importance of having renowned experts and discussing valuable topics during the seminar. This created a valuable platform for healthcare professionals to exchange information, acquire new knowledge, and improve their abilities in providing treatment and care to patients.

The seminar showcased a diverse range of presentations by esteemed professionals. Eldridge Peter John, MSc, provided insights on the use of ultrapure dialysis fluids, the importance of adhering to ISO standards for water quality in hemodialysis, and the steps involved in converting tap water into RO water. He also discussed the challenges associated with mixing and sterilizing transfer tools.

Dung delivered a presentation on the recent advancements in managing CKD, highlighting the significance of the 2024 KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline. This guideline, which is the first update since 2012, provides valuable insights into the evaluation and management of CKD. Important factors to consider are the criteria used to diagnose CKD, the risk of progression, how often monitoring should occur, the standard procedures for diagnosis, and the guidelines for early intervention using a multidisciplinary approach. Timely screening and prompt referral to nephrology specialists are essential in effectively addressing the progression of CKD.

During the morning session, Dung delivered a comprehensive presentation on the topic of “Prescribing for a Hemodialysis Patient.” The focus was on various treatment parameters, including filter type, duration, blood flow rate, dialysate flow rate, solute concentrations, and ultrafiltration.

During the presentation, Tam discussed the management of osteoporosis in patients with CKD. The focus was on the significance of kidney function, medications that are excreted through the kidneys, and the impact of low bone turnover disease in the treatment of osteoporosis in CKD patients. Ensuring optimal blood mineral levels is crucial in minimizing the risk of skeletal and vascular complications. Lien presented a comprehensive discussion on the relationship between kidney disease and pregnancy, focusing on the alterations in renal function that occur during pregnancy and their effects on the outcomes of both kidney disease and pregnancy.

The afternoon session also featured additional informative presentations. Dung highlighted the significance of cardiovascular issues in patients with CKD. It is important to note that cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of mortality in CKD patients, particularly those undergoing hemodialysis. Accurate prognosis relies heavily on effective fluid management. It is crucial to educate hemodialysis patients about the potential consequences of fluid overload and the importance of following treatment protocols.

One of the highlights of the seminar was the active involvement of the nursing staff, who play a crucial role in providing patient care and operating hemodialysis machines. Notable talks were given by Nguyen Thi Ngoc Linh, MSc, head nurse of the Urology-Nephrology-Andrology Center, who discussed “Facility Requirements for Hemodialysis Units,” and Do Thi Lan Anh, deputy nurse of the Hemodialysis Unit, who presented on “Safety in Reusing Hemodialysis Filters.”

In addition, participants had the opportunity to visit the Nephrology-Hemodialysis Unit at Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC during the seminar.
