Seminar Highlights

Assoc. Prof Tran Quang Binh emphasized that diabetes is prevalent across various medical departments, including Cardiology, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Nephrology. The incidence of diabetes has been rising, driven by improved living conditions and increasingly stressful work environments.

Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a severe complication affecting up to 50% of the approximately 150 million people with diabetes globally, which constitutes about 2% of the world’s population. DPN can lead to significant morbidity, including pain, loss of sensation, and muscle weakness or atrophy.

During the seminar, Dinh Thi Thao Mai, MD, from the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department provided an in-depth overview of DPN, discussing its classification, pathogenesis, and risk factors. Dr. Mai also presented the latest diagnostic and treatment guidelines for DPN, based on the 2022 consensus from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

Vo Tran Nguyen Duy, MD, and Tran Thanh Thuy, MD, shared clinical case studies illustrating both painless and painful presentations of DPN. Duy highlighted that the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy complications in Southeast Asia is notably high, ranging from 30-50%. He stressed the importance of stable blood glucose control in managing and mitigating the progression of DPN.
