Tam Anh General Hospital featured three of Vietnam’s most innovative medical technologies at VIIE 2023.
The National Innovation Center (NIC) in Hanoi’s Hoa Lac High-Tech Park hosted the Vietnam International Innovation Expo 2023 (VIIE 2023) on the morning of October 28, 2023. One of the major themes of this event is the integration of medical technology in the field of healthcare.
Three of the most cutting-edge technologies in healthcare are currently being used at Tam Anh General Hospital and Tam Anh Research Institute (TAMRI) in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City: a robotic system for cranial surgery, an embryo culture device, and a virtual reality navigation system for joint replacement surgery. These three innovations, backed by artificial intelligence (AI) applications, have led to remarkable advancements in the quality of care provided in recent years.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and other government officials tour Tam Anh General Hospital’s exhibit
Dr. Chu Tan Si, head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, warmly welcomed Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and other dignitaries. The Tam Anh General Hospital exhibition booth attracted leaders from ministries, central and local agency heads, and representatives from domestic and international research institutes and universities. They were eager to learn about the Modus V Synaptive brain surgery robot, which is the only robotic medical device in Vietnam for surgery related to neurological-cranial-spinal issues.
Currently, only about ten nations (mainly the developed ones) have embraced the use of robot for brain surgery. Remarkably, Tam Anh General Hospital stands as the sole facility in Vietnam to possess this cutting-edge technology. The Modus V Synaptive robot has proven to be a life-saving tool at Tam Anh Hospital, aiding in the treatment of approximately 90 patients with life-threatening conditions like brain tumors, spinal tumors, hemorrhagic strokes and others.

The booth of Tam Anh General Hospital System caught the attention of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who was intrigued by the potential of these cutting-edge technologies in improving medical examination and treatment, ultimately benefiting patients. He has instructed Tam Anh General Hospital to prioritize the development of medical technology in order to better serve the healthcare needs of the people.
Professor Nguyen Van Tuan, director of the Tam Anh Research Institute (TAMRI), also delivered a speech at VIIE 2023 on the topic “The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in personalized medicine for osteoporosis.” The speech was part of the forum on the application of medical technology in healthcare, focusing on introducing and connecting innovative potential. This study showcases the impressive achievements of Prof. Tuan and his team in utilizing AI for the diagnosis and prognosis of osteoporosis.

According to Prof. Tuan, his team has created an algorithm that employs an AI model to automatically diagnose vertebral fractures.
“We refer to it as the ‘Shape-Based Algorithm’ (SBA). The SBA technique boasts an impressive success rate of 92-98% when compared to a medical professional’s diagnosis. This approach can be helpful in evaluating hospitals and clinics for vertebral fractures. We have also created a system called ‘xBMD’ that utilizes AI to accurately predict bone density using X-ray technology. The xBMD technique demonstrates a diagnostic accuracy of 95% or higher in identifying cases of osteoporosis when compared to the gold standard. This is a significant development for medical centers that lack access to DXA technology.”
The Government’s keen interest in this field has been affirmed by VIIE 23’s dedicated focus on presenting and introducing new healthcare products and technologies. This event is expected to bring forth a wave of noteworthy advancements in medical technology and enhance the efficiency of medical examinations and treatments for the Vietnamese population.
