The event took place at Tam Anh Research Institute on December 14-15, 2024. Nearly 200 participants, including leading experts in musculoskeletal imaging from the UK and India, joined the event. Experts from the Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in HCMC led practical demonstrations and discussions using real clinical cases on MRI and ultrasound, creating an engaging and dynamic atmosphere.

This seminar is part of a long-term collaboration between Tam Anh Research Institute, Tam Anh General Hospital and GE HealthCare. The program introduces a new training model combining theory and hands-on practice, marking its first implementation in Vietnam. This innovative method has been enthusiastically received by physicians at Tam Anh General Hospital.

Ho Hoang Phuong, MD, PhD – Director of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology Center – emphasized during the opening ceremony: “Our goal is to enhance training in new techniques for musculoskeletal imaging. By collaborating with top international experts and investing in the most advanced technologies, we aim to provide accurate and early diagnosis for complex conditions. Ultimately, this ensures timely and effective treatment for our patients.”

The two-day event featured 15 scientific presentations and 4 practical workshops, focusing on updates and advancements in musculoskeletal imaging. Key topics included advanced MRI imaging techniques for musculoskeletal disorders, MRI imaging of the hip joint (including femoral head and labral cartilage) and MRI of the brachial and lumbar plexus.

Meanwhile, experts from Tam Anh General Hospital contributed significant presentations, including anatomy and landmarks of upper and lower limb nerves, and discussion of five challenging MRI cases with international experts.

GE HealthCare provided cutting-edge medical equipment, including ultrasound systems and PACS accounts for real-time “case review” training. This modern learning format, introduced for the first time in Vietnam, allowed participants to study clinical cases in advance and engage deeply during the workshop.

Physicians also demonstrated the latest imaging technologies, including AI-assisted MRI and next-generation ultrasound systems, such as 3T MRI and Hockey probe ultrasound.

Chau Thi Ngoc Anh, MD, MSc – Deputy Director of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology Center – highlighted that: “Previously, doctors relied heavily on CT or X-ray results for bone assessments. Today, 3T MRI with ZTR sequences can provide clear bone morphology, detect fractures, and even generate 3D reconstructions. This is particularly beneficial for pediatric and pregnant patients, as it avoids ionizing radiation exposure.”

Experts said MRI with AI improves detection of bone marrow edema, occult fractures, and soft tissue damage. AI-assisted ultrasound enables clearer assessments of inflammation, nerve swelling, and injuries in key joints such as the shoulder, knee, and ankle.

Nguyen Quang Trong, MD – Head of Ultrasound Unit, Secretary General of the Vietnam Ultrasound Association – said: “AI software significantly enhances musculoskeletal ultrasound, providing detailed insights into conditions such as ligament injuries, tumors, and infections. This allows for a comprehensive evaluation and improves diagnostic outcomes.”

The conference provided a platform for physicians to engage in meaningful discussions with international experts and learn directly through real case demonstrations.

Vo Duy, MD – Head of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Unit, expressed:  “This event allows doctors to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and learn about advanced technologies. It’s a great opportunity to elevate our professional expertise.”

“The combination of theory, practice, and live case reviews creates a highly interactive and beneficial learning experience,” Vo Thi Minh Nguyet, Head of Musculoskeletal Imaging Unit, said. “Questions were addressed on the spot, offering tremendous value to participants.”

Through comprehensive presentations, hands-on workshops, and real-time discussions, the conference successfully updated participants on the latest diagnostic methods and techniques in musculoskeletal imaging.
